travelling anywhere in France from the UK is not difficult or too
time-consuming. The French
domestic rail network SNCF is highly subsidised and reliable.

Saintes approach from the N137 and take the exit which offers "Saintes,
Abbaye aux Dames and Chaniers". Then follow D24, « route
de Cognac par la vallée de la Charente" through Les
Arcivaux, the river is to your right.
There is a flashing speed sign, followed by a speed trap at 50kph
(about 30 mph) just before the railway level crossing – a
chicane – at Port Hublé. (Many people including locals
have been caught here)
towards the village of Chaniers, going past a farm entrance, a 70
kph sign, a flashing light and then a post marking Rue Pampanie
all on the right. For the front entrance turn right and immediately
left into impasse Pampanie and stop! We are the last house on the
go 50m. past Rue Pampanie and take the next right onto a white surfaced,
steeply descending drive. This is immediately adjacent to another
house which has a tarmac roadside edge parking area for two cars.
the east leave Cognac to Saintes by N141.On the left take the D83
to Dompierre and Chaniers. Pass the centre of Chaniers (crossroad
with bakery on right hand side). 1 km further on, cross the roundabout
by the Chaniers exit sign. Chez Périneau is marked. Take
the next left into Rue Pampanie. (See above)

ferry and car
Ferries operates a service from the Poole and Portsmouth in the
UK to Caen, Le Havre, Cherbourg or St Malo which is a six hour drive
by car to Chez Iris, Chaniers. You can also take ferries to Calais,
and Boulogne, then drive via Rouen and Poitiers to the Charente.
There is space for at least 4 cars to park at the back of the house.

from London Stansted to La Rochelle and starting in the Spring to
Angouleme from 99p single, excluding tax. Prices vary from British
but you have more airport flexibility from around the UK to Bordeaux
Eurostar to Lille, then switch to a TGV service continuing as far
as Angouleme then finally to Cognac. Either pick up your hire-car
or a taxi to Chaniers. The journey by Eurotunnel/Eurostar to Calais
is fast and the remaining distance is by motorway nearly all the
way to Saintes.
